However, chronic diseases currently have the largest impact on the nation’s health. Nearly 75% of healthcare dollars are spent on the treatment of chronic diseases. For example, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease are among the most expensive and preventable diseases. Each year about 50% of deaths are caused by some type of chronic diseases, which accounts for about 7 out 10 deaths. “Although chronic diseases are among the leading causes of death in the United States, infectious diseases continue to be important causes of morbidity and mortality (Friss, Bell, Philibert, & Dewar, 2013).”
