When defining ethics concerning psychological research, one must take into account that ethics can be broadly based depending on the individual who is conducting the research. Ethics is defined as a specific manner in which we should govern our conduct or in more commonly used words, our morality; however because each individual interprets and applies what they believe to be common sense is so widely varied especially in instances such as psychological research, we must develop, monitor, and uphold a written code of conduct. Institutional Review Boards for the Protection of Human Subjects (IRB’s) have been established at most institutions that conduct research with humans (University of Washington, 1998). Institutional Review Boards are comprised of scientists, clinical faculty, and administrators who review research according to the procedures set forth by federal regulations (University of Washington, 1998).
