Emotions are those physiological and psychological changes that can affect one’s behavior. Uncontrolled and/or negative emotions can result from stressful responses to life situations and crises. Emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive and express emotion, assimilate emotions in thought, understand and reason with emotion, and regulate emotion in the self and others (Mayer, Salovey, & Caruso, 2000 as cited in Sternberg, 2005, p. 486). Robertson (2007) explains that a traditional view of the terms intelligence and emotion is that the two are incompatible. Research is presented to counter this. Cote (2010) asserts that recent research has trended in arguments against cognition as measured by IQ as a high-level process and emotions based “on primitive definitions of evolution” (p.827).
