Need 150 words Response Nathan Freeman 1. Why does our textbook argue that the “moral answer” for the fall of Rome is not a sufficient explanation? Do you agree or disagree with this conclusion? What other explanations do you find particularly convincing for why Rome fell? The textbook poses the argument that Rome’s morality was always in question, so why didn’t Rome fall sooner? How did it last so long being corrupt as it was? I would agree. If anyting, the morals would have improved as Christians became the majority and the official religion of Rome. I think if you combine Augustine and Gibbons together, you have a very interesting dynamic. In a way, they were both looking at the same coin from dfferent sides. One could say that the Roman Empire morphed into the Roman Catholic Church and lives still today. The politics became less important than the religion so the power shifted from the Caesar to the Pope. Despite the political carvings on the map of which piece of real estate belonged to whom, when the Pope said “Go to war”, the nations joined together and fought crusades. The Pope still does a lot to influence Europe and the Americas. People cared less about their national citizenship than they did about their standing with the church so it mattered little who conquered what as long as the church could stand.
