B. Community-needs Assessment Summary Demographics Sentinel City has an estimated population of 634,265 as of 2012. The racial breakdown of the population is 80.5% White, 10.4% African American, 2.0% American Indian and Alaska Native and less than 1% Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders, these numbers include 31.5% persons of Hispanic origin who may be of any race. The city’s population has increased by 5.7% since the 2010 census. The city’s demographics by age group are 7% of people under the age of 5, 21.7% under the age of 18 and 10.5% over the age of 65. (2016).Sentinel City has a median household income of $49,091, approximately 20% lower than the US median income of $59,039 as of the 2016 Census. Sentinel City also has a higher rate of families living below the poverty level than the national average. Nearly one in five (18.9%) residents are below the poverty level, compared to 12.7% for the U.S. as a whole according to the Census Bureau’s 2016 estimates. (Jessica L. Semega, Kayla R. Just over half the population (50.4%) own their own home, while 45.8% of housing units are in multi-unit structures.
