(1) What is Pleural Effusion? Pleural effusion is the accumulation of fluid in the lungs with
compression of overlying tissue. The lungs have two spaces: pleural space and lung wall. When fluid accumulates between the two spaces, there is not where to go. The lungs do not have room to expand and continue to push against the lung. Sometimes a cancer may be responsible for the expansion between the two spaces. Other causes of pleural effusion may be tuberculosis and hemothorax or bleeding into the pleural space. Most of the conditions fluid in the pleural space are called pleurisy and are very painful to the patient. It is hard for them to take in a deep breath.
