Introduction
Community assessment is essential for planning and implementing programs to improve the overall health of a population. A windshield survey is a resourceful assessment used to identify healthcare strengths and challenges in a specific community. The assessment is conducted while driving around in a community and observing the unique characteristics of the community including the physical environment as well as cultural aspects (Ballantyne-Rice, Chopp, Evans, Ho, & Hsiung, 2016). Community The windshield survey was conducted on the suburban village of Patchogue, NY located on Long Island. As you enter the village the area is mostly residential with larger single family homes built around the 1900’s on a busy highway. Most of the houses are occupied and maintained on several acres landscaped lots. As you travel down the highway the area becomes more commercial, including retail stores, numerous bar and restaurants, an assisted living facilityand a newly constructed condominium. The majority of the buildings in the commercial area are occupied with bars, restaurants, banks, pharmacies and retail stores. There were a few Spanish markets, convenient stores and restaurants as well. Retail stores included clothing retail, liquor stores, smoke shops and pawn shops.
