GEG7094: Application of Condition Monitoring to Reduce Greenhouse Emissions – Management

Climate change related to increasing greenhouse gas emissions is accepted as fact by most people, and even if not so, saving energy surely makes good business sense. This project would require investigation of the condition monitoring currently used in your workplace and find out how its application can be related quantitatively to impacting greenhouse emissions. An example might be the use of thermography to
estimate heat losses from a valve body, or another hot component, and to express that in greenhouse terms. Another might be to use ultrasonics to estimate leakage through a closed, but leaking, valve. Outcomes would be economic justifications for adopting
other CM techniques.

Condition Monitoring Of Heat Exchangers

The Terminal Temperature Difference has been found useful on shell & tube heat exchangers to indicate tube fouling. This is easy to measure, as pipe surface temperatures can often be conveniently used as an indicator of the temperature of the liquid within. The TTD is only useful provided the flows of the cooling fluid and coolant liquid doe does not vary much. The correlation is not known for plate type heat
exchangers.The project would be to set up repeatable temperature measurements, plus flows, on a shell & tube heat exchanger and experiment to see how far flows can vary before TTD changes significantly. “Seeded” fouling should be introduced to further experiment.
The same test would also be conducted on a plate type exchanger.
