Compare and contrast clinical and counseling psychologists in relation to their use of psychological tests.

Psychological assessment is a tool which counselors and clinicians and other mental health professionals use to measure human constructs such as emotions, intelligence, self-esteem, personality, and aptitude. O’Byrne and Goodyear (1997), assert that client assessment is central to the role of psychology even if it is “cursory or informal”. Both clinical and counseling psychologists are focused on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of abnormal behavior. However, clinical psychologists are more focused on severe forms of behavior pathology. As O’Byrne and Goodyear note, clinical assessment involves a judgment concerning some uncertainty. Thus, clinicians may utilize testing to make clinical judgments and/or inferences about the client. For example, clinical measures may be used in a variety of settings and for purposes of: (a) making differential diagnosis, (b) conceptualizing a case (c) selecting and planning for treatment, and (d) monitoring treatment progress and outcomes.
