Informed consent is essentially a notification, generally in the form of a document, that a doctor gives to a patient prior to surgical procedures so the patient is aware of the potential risks they may encounter. Therapists use them as well when undergoing new treatment such as biofeedback or a type of therapy that addresses social phobias and intense anxiety disorders.
