The newly hired compliance officer in a routine review came across what at first appeared to be a simple billing glitch. Upon further review, however, the compliance officer discovers that the billing glitch is really a larger issue and further discovers that the organization has been overcharging Medicare for the past five years. The compliance officer writes a report detailing the overbilling problem and delivers it to you and the CEO. The CEO instructs you to fix the billing problem and to have the compliance officer rewrite their report to indicate that the problem was an isolated incident and has been fixed.
