Strategies for Implementing CPOE Introduction
Synopsis:Health Matters is a newly formed health system comprising two community hospitals, Cooper Memorial and Ashley Valley. The health system used a single vendor solution for its health information systems. The challenge presented in this case is how to implement the CPOE module effectively.
The challenge is compounded by the fact that Health Matters does not currently have a CIO.
In addition, both the CEO and the chairperson of the clinical information committee were involved in failed CPOE implementations at other institutions. (Pages 617 through 619, Wager, Lee, and Glaser text)
This case study will provide students an opportunity to virtually engage in the processes associated with an IT/IS project by taking into consideration the information provided within the case and augmenting this with external resources.
Student will be exposed to just a few of the challenges experienced by project managers as they plan and implement IS/IT projects.
Finally, the students will be expected to formulate realistic strategies for overcoming these barriers to ensure that the project is successfully implemented on time and on budget.
Directions
The students are expected to carefully read the assigned case study, then thoroughly and explicitly address each component of the corresponding case study questions, which are located on located on pages 619 to 620 of the Wager, Lee, and Glaser text.
The responses should reflect higher level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation), which is essential for someone being prepared to serve in an operational capacity within the healthcare and related industry.
There is no minimum number of references that need to be utilized to support the completion of this assignment; however, it is generally understood that any good case analysis will incorporate the appropriate quality and quantity of outside sources to support any suppositions and recommendations.
